Case Report: Severe Periodontal Disease in Pixie, 6 Year Old Pomeranian

In February 2025, Dr. Jessica Dampier evaluated Pixie, a 6-year-old female intact Pomeranian diagnosed with severe periodontal disease that required multiple extractions. Faced with the severity of Pixie’s condition, Dr. Dampier performed closed root planing on teeth with mild to moderate periodontitis, specifically teeth 309 and 409, and applied PerioVive, a hyaluronic acid gel designed to promote tissue healing and regeneration.

Radiographs taken during Pixie’s February 2025 evaluation showed a significant level of bone loss: approximately 50% around the distal root of tooth 309 and 30% bone loss with stage I furcation exposure on tooth 409. The progress made in just 12 months was impressive. At her follow-up visit in February 2026, Pixie's radiographs demonstrated remarkable improvement: the bone loss around tooth 309 was reduced to about 20%, and the furcation exposure on tooth 409 was completely healed.

Dr. Dampier was thrilled with the results, noting, “I immediately showed the images to my colleagues, and everyone was deeply impressed. Pixie had 25 extractions just one year ago when we applied PerioVive, and I was truly amazed by her recovery. This time, based on the stabilization we saw from PerioVive, Pixie only required a routine cleaning, which meant less time under anesthesia. These photos are going to be displayed in our exam rooms so clients can see firsthand how we’re saving teeth and improving oral health!”

How PerioVive is Changing the Game in Periodontal Care

Pixie’s case highlights the powerful impact of PerioVive in managing severe periodontal disease in pets. This non-invasive gel not only helps to heal the periodontium but also enhances tissue regeneration, reducing the need for extensive procedures and reducing recovery times. Dr. Dampier’s experience with Pixie underscores the importance of early intervention and consistent care when managing periodontal disease.

The results seen in Pixie are a testament to the potential of advanced periodontal treatments like PerioVive, which offer pets a better chance at maintaining healthy teeth and avoiding painful extractions. With proper care and innovative treatments, pets suffering from periodontal disease can experience improved comfort and quality of life.
